This article discusses the increasing use of technology in the gym. While this topic is not new as a research or discussion topic the actual use of technology in PE, especially at the elementary level, can be limited. The author discusses the role technology can play within a PE program giving options applicable to high school aged programs, while also highlighting the need for PE programs to include high levels of social interactions and activity. Barriers to tech integration are discussed such as time allocated to training and PD in ICT, security of student data and images along with the guidelines for their use in schools, the potential that tech takes away from active time in the gym, and the potential for PE teaching to be reduced to ICT surveillance of student performance rather than teaching of skills. Sullivan concludes by stating that technology has the potential to improve outcomes across the curriculum but hat in PE there is still a need for further investigations into “how technology can be used appropriately to support learning within the context of PE, whilst also maximising physical activity in lessons.”
Reflection The use of digital technology in PE has been on the rise since the late 2000’s. It came onto my radar around the same time, during the 2008-09 school year. At that time, I started following The PE Geek on Twitter and was just getting into the smart phone world with a Blackberry Bold... but I was still a few years away from using educational technology in the gym. I faced many of the barriers discussed in the article. Obviously the first was growing up in the pre-digital age, and doing my BEd in the mid-90's. So, I had no personal experience of using let alone teaching with technology. Additionally, as this was an emerging trend there was little in the way of PD available. Luckily, I along with another HRCE PE teacher were able to arrange to have Jarrod Robinson, The PE Geek, come to Halifax in August 2015 and he did a session for a group of PE teachers on integrating mobile apps into our gymnasiums. This has been the only PE based educational technology PD I have ever received through the HRCE. Another barrier I faced that is mentioned is the logistical issues of who can have tier picture taken/videos taken and who cannot. In some cases, it isn’t too tough but when you don’t have that information available it really limits the ability to use video in class. As my educational technology integration stands these days it is an augmentation to the program in the gym. Considering Puentedura’s SAMR Model of Technology Integration - Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, Redefinition – the majority of my ed tech use is augmentation and occasionally I have been able to work in a Modification to the program that is tech based and reliant. I find this model helpful to me when considering tech integration – am I simply replacing old school PE with techy PE? Am I augmenting their experience or modifying the program by using tech? How can I redesign/redefine this program with tech to make it better? Sullivan, Rachel. (January 2019). The use of digital technology in primary physical education. Impact.
